Cascading style sheets : the definitive guide looks really good. Eric Meyer is one of the top CSS gurus out there so I don't think you can go wrong with his books.

What do you recommend for someone wanting to learn CSS from the ground all the way up? Starting with basics and then ending with all the advanced tricks...

Well, some of the books came in.

Redsign 2.0 looks really good. There's even inserts by Zeldman, Eric Meyer, Lynda Weinman and some other big names !! Really good outline for the design process including a lot of business planning and project mangment that designers probably don't think about enough. Anyone who does serious web design projects should see this book.

The writing one is terrible. All marketing shpeak. I hate that crap.

The training one I just got because it relates to what I do at work. It's really old though so doesn't seem to have much useful information (copyrighted 2000, but the screenshots look more 1998).

The Eric Meyer CSS is more of a reference book (from O'Reilly). I'm not sure if I'll pick through this or not. I'm sure there's lots of good stuff to learn sprinkled through all the stuff I already know. I think all web designers should own a book like this. I think the Eric Meyer on CSS would be more interesting.... I should go add this stuff to my Amazon wish list while I'm thinking of it.

Jakob Nielsen is an idiot. Who, in their right mind, comes up with an idea that the letter C is "Unusable." He would place on my top ten list of stupid people.

I just had to say that.

Anyway, I never thought about checking the library for web development books. I'll check it out this weekend and see what's up. Thanks for the inspiration Megan.

When I was in USA I found a couple of libraries have shops, they were selling some older books, I managed to buy several on C\C++, vrml (not sure why), CSS, JSS (netscape css) and others, sadly my eyes were to big for my suitcase and had to leave most of them there. They were only 10-50 cents each depending on the condition of the covers

Maybe, but ugh, that guy has an ego problem! I remember reading a year end column once where he attempted to prove that since 80% of web designers hadn't read his column then therefore 80% of web sites had those same usability problems Haven't read anything of his since.

ETA: Of course, now I can't find it! Maybe it never existed in the first place :eek:

Designing with Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman, now that's one that they should have! I put in an official request so hopefully they'll get it. (Of course I should really just bite the bullet and buy some of these! Web design books can be so expensive.)
