You might consider looking at the msn and yahoo themes and attempt to capitalize on the proven online models. I think people are looking for more universal functionality. Your first impression is vital to longevity.

Megan, I took some of your ideas into consideration. I just got rid of the "Newest Links" box and the advanced search box. I removed the outline on the Submit New Category. I tried adding the orange to the background on some elements but it looked to much like Nickelodeon :S

Is it looking better?

I can't believe you don't like the bomb theme! I love it. It's unique and cool:D I guess Americans are just fond of bombs.

The site looks the same in IE and Opera so I don't see what the problem is with the layout. There's nothing wrong with using CSS for layout - browsers support it well enough and if you know what you're doing it's not a big problem. One little problem is that text in the serach text is showing up on top of the bomb graphic in Opera.

The problem with this is that the overal layout is poorly integrated. Things seem to be scattered around with little rhyme or reason. Take, for example, the "Submit new Category" and "Advanced search" areas underneath the main directory listing. WHy so; much space in between? Those should be pulled up so they have more unity with the directory. The boxes behind them should be clearly visible or not there at all. That very pale grey is almost visible but too light to really notice. Also look at the 5 newest links box. It is next to the navigation bar but totally doesn't line up with it. Alignment is important. There's also a lack of attention to detail here in that items that flow over more than one line have way too much line spacing.

Why put everything in a box anyway? The best layouts make the lines between div's invisible. I shouldn't be able to see your code structure by looking at the page.

I like the orange/black/white/grey colour scheme, but I think the orange should be more prominent. Try using it as a background in some areas instead of just for link text.

I'm sure the code is great here and it works well and all that but the design is just not doing it for me

Nice page set up and colors however if you resize the page (move the sides of the window in and back out again) on IE 6 the CHOOSE CATEGORY combo box moves in front of the links on the left thats kinda strange..

I am seeing CSS layouts. In most people's opinion, this is good, though there is currently no browser that fully supports CSS with no bugs yet (feel free to look for a CSS competibilty table). If you take a look in IE, there is a problem with the nav bar, screenshot attached. The text of the links in the top are a little big, it's hard to take my focus of them, and look at the content below. If you take a look at www.getafreelancer.com, there are some links on the top, personally, I would prefer to have links that size. Although graphics will slow down the time it takes to load the page, I think a decent header, picture, logo will be better.

Yeah, this is a useful site, Like the Logo, overall looks fine and easy to navigate
