Well, Plesk is simplistic, but too simplistic.

Have a think about the scenario I'm facing at the moment. Domain A has a forum on it (see if you can guess which forum that might be) while Domain B is going to have a copy of vbdrupal. vbdrupal is heavily integrated with vBulletin (it uses the same settings right down to the same config file).

My problem is: Thanks to Plesks intensely annoying meddling with the way PHP works (using open_basedir) I can't access one domain directory from the other. Basically Plesk is messing with settings I don't want it to, but there's no way to stop it! So Plesk is simplistic, and fine if you're running some HTML only sites but not at all suitable for more complicated environments.

I also found it just plain annoying! I think Megan's (the person in charge round here ) first response to me was:

I run two different Ensim installs on two different servers. Their latest version has an outstanding interface. 3.5 was a bit clunkier.

Out of interest, would you mind telling us what was unsatifactory about PLESK? We have found our customers love it. I only ask out of interest.

Also, PLESK 8 (UNIX Only at the moment) has also come along leaps and bounds.

CPanel is the most popular and in most demand at the moment.

But Plesk is one which is considered the most solid out of them all from the server admin's point of view. CPanel can easily be quite buggy. You cannot go wrong with a stable rock solid Plesk. Plesk is also compatible to windows and unix systems where as CPanel is not.

Having said that CPanel is taking the market with storm. It's probably because of its nice interface and ease of use from the client end. In many ways the server admin's point of view should be the deciding factor however, as its their job to keep the software security tight and bug-free.

What OS is on this server? Windows or Linux? If it is on a Linux system I do recommend using cPanel. cPanel is really easy for the end users to work with. Cuts down on some of the support you deal with plesk. We run both and our support on plesk is much higher then with cpanel.

I've used webmin.com before and it was ok and I'm running servers on cpanel now with I highly recommend. It is pricey though. You may want to look into directadmin.com. No experience with that though.

The BEST FREE control panel is VHCS (http://www.vhcs.net). It is relatively easy to install on Debian, however, does not work too well on other distros.

Use this install guide, and you should be set to go.

Plesk and cPanel are probably the most popular. Ensim makes a halfway decent control panel as well. A free alternative is to use http://www.webmin.com

I know that Cpanel is very popular these days. You can also look at demos of hosting company's own control panels. Some have put together easy-to-use control panels.
