the only menus the search engines can follow are ones where there is Anchor directly in the source code. If it is written on to the page by javascript {document.write(URI) } or uses object.location then it won't be.

I'm pretty sure that you're menu's will be read by search engines. if you wanted to get fancy and write it in PHP I granentee that the search engine can read it. But as I understand it, the search engine's robot sees your page just like a user would. Anything that can be seen on access is seen by the search engine robot. I'm not sure if the drop down stuff is seen or not...

Do webcrawlers parse and understand javascript? I heard they really only can parse DHTML/HTML or at least they prefer to parse it and do not impact your sites ranking.

1st of all DHTML is basicly the same thing as HTML. Its just combineing JavaScript with events passed for the HTML.
Java and JavaScript are two totaly diffrent languages. Make sure your talking about the right one.
