Maybe its time to retitle this thread,
Many visitors might get this as a negative rep for the WMP 10 which I think is better than 9, the ripper works ok, not unless you got dbpoweramp...

OK. After working with my Linux box for a few days, I re-attached the XP box to the Internet and everything was working fine!

Everything except IE6, that is. I went to the Microsoft site and tried to download the IE6 service pack, but it returned a message that SP1 (for IE) was already installed.

Then I tried to re-install Norton Anti-Virus, but got a message that a CAB file was missing. After doing some research, I found that the CAB file had something to do with IE6.

The solution: Use Firefox! Ah, ha,ha, ha!

The proublem is most likely SP2. System restore only fixes settings for windows. It proubaly wont help if the proublem came from installing MP 10. I know you dont want to reformat but it might be your last hope. I end up reformatting onece a month I recomend it onece a year at least though.

Good luck anyway!

Good point, but that's not the case. Everything was working fine, including Windows Media Player 9. No problem with Internet connectivity.

I had installed XP about a month ago, dowloaded SP 2, plus some other updates. Turned off the Automatic Update function last week, because I was concerned the C: drive might get too full with updates. Didn't run the Windows firewall, but was using ZoneAlarm instead.

Somewhere I read that Windows Media Player 10 was ready, so I decided to download it, and that's when all the problems began.

Ok, you say various net related products are having problems because WMP10 stopped installing. Perhaps something else is the problem, and WMP10 stops installing, becuase like your other programs, it is loosing internet access?

Just a thought to look into. Could just be coincidence that installing WMP10 was the first thing you did AFTER something else killed your network. Or this could be one of those things that is just there to give Billy something to giggle about in his sleep, like when IE 4 killed the installer for Word Perfect. (4 times reinstalled OS, all the updates and WP crashed on install. Finally, 5th time, did everything BUT the upgrade to IE 4, and it installed fine. later found out IE 4 changed a DLL that WP used for install.)

Well, I ran the XP restore program, and everything worked OK for an hour. Then Norton AV went out. Then Outlook Express couldn't function. Then neither of my Web browsers worked.

So, I hooked up my Linux box and that's what I'm using now.

It all started when I tried to download Windows Media Player 10. I tried installing it twice and both installs stopped prematurely. When I get the time, I'll see what else I can do to restore Internet connectivity, because that seems to be where the problem is.

Your problem is not with any of those programs... except maybe Windows XP

I have it installed on 100 or so machines and have never had a problem except when someone tries to rip a song. I usually send them CDEx for that.
