And I'm pretty sure everything's 777

Not sure without more info, but whenever I install stuff, I change it to 777, then just change it back to the most restrictive possible while still letting the program do its thing.

757 does mean that its not group writable. That's the only permission left off, so maybe that's how the installation is trying to access it.
