Well my offer will insult them but it sounds from your story that unless I'm just plain lucky, I ain't gonna get it anyway so why not contact them.

The only thing that could backfire on me is that if I keep quiet maybe they'll let it expire. It was only registered for the first time in January for one year. (I thought about registering it in December but was too stupid to just pay the $8 then). If nothing ends up there they just may let it expire. If I say something they'll hold on to it forever.

Anybody got more stories for me/us?

One thing to remember, just becasue you don't see a website, doesn't mean it's not in use. I have had over the years several people write me to ask for my domain name (I have the .NET of a name that is not available in the other common formats).

Usually the e-mail starts out "since you don't use it". Well no for a long time there was no web site at the main domainname.net however I had several websites at NAME.domainname.net and tons of e-mails in use.

I did recently make an offer for a domain name. The broker they used said the minimum offer was $60, so I figured I'd offer $100. (I was pretty sure that would be way low). Yep sure enough, they came back asking $8000. I think they will get it, it is a 3 letter .NET that is the initials of two major universities. It was last used as a free portal for the one university (unofficial).
