Photoshop probably takes the longest and need the most resources but once you get in a groove with it nothing beats its power and flexibility.

I tried the GIMP and found it confuseing. But I dont think photoshop is the best for the web. I refuse to use anything from macromedia. Feels like I am useing I childrens program. Left with no really good options I just make due with photoshop and I am starting to got into Image ready.

If I heard correctly, The GIMP was made specifically for web graphics. Fireworks and Photoshop are also good for web graphics.

There's really NO restrictions to using photoshop...if need be blow the image up to 1000% and do it pixel by pixel

It's quite a matter of taste nasanu, as with most things you need to find what works best for you. I hope we've helped though!

On a seperate note: I don't think the GIMP can do vector graphics - might be wrong - I'll find out anyway but if anyone knows for certain whether it does or not, please hit reply

I have fireworks (old version like 4 or something) so i'll mess around with that. I'll also find a good photoshop tutorial if I really can get the results out of photoshop. Thanks

The design of this site was done with Fireworks. It makes it a little easier to work with curves and such. You might want to read up on the difference between vector and raster graphics. Vector programs will allow you to work with lines like that a lot more easily. I've never really liked Photoshop's implementation of vector tools. Adobe Illustrator is a good program to check out for that. I also really like the way Flash handles vector graphics.

ETA: Fireworks is sort of like a hybrid of vector and raster graphics. The tools work like vector tools but the output is raster. Here's an article with more info:

Photoshop is best (or the GIMP, I'm a little torn at the moment)!

If you want to make pretty curves use the workpath tool then stroke the path.
