Using the script you've found that links to a description window, simply enter a URL into the description field, then simply use the content of the description field as the URL for the datelink instead of opening the description window.

It might involve adding an extra database call depending on how the database is structured but it should be relatively simple really.

It can be CGI or PHP. No, I'm not a programmer, but I've been able to make some minor changes in some scripts in the past.

I've tried to find something close that I could modify, but haven't found anything I thought I could work with yet.

I have seen a few that would probably not be that hard to customize to do this if you could program. (If I had time I'd do it, I like puzzles like this

Since you indicated that you would be willing to pay for a script, have you contacted the designers of the site you gave as an example to find out where they got theirs?

If they custom wrote it, and what you are planning on using it for isn't competition, maybe they might concider selling you a license to use it.
