Appreciate all the help. I have never had a laptop myself, and never really needed to unplug my printer from the tower, so I just didn't know. I asked Dad to unplug the printer from his laptop now so I can see what error message he was talking about, and of course, the error message he claims to receive didn't show up. Nothing like giving tech advice to people over 50. Again - big thanks.

Unless we're missing something, the only thing I know of that "allows a safe disconnect" is when you hook in a USB device, and it gives you the annoying tray icon....

Yeah a standard printer can be plugged and unplugged safely at anytime!

I'm pulling cables, putting cables in and stuff out of the back of my comp all the time with no problems...

Well, that wouldn't be software related, you're probably thinking "howswappable" but thats not something software can really effect, except to automate the hardware detect from the device manager. I didn't think there was any issue with disconnecting a printer from a computer/laptop, even if it's parallel port.
