Well, the only problem I see him having with learning Perl is that it isn't inline with webpages, and he seems to be more focused on the front end.

If you are looking for something to merge the front, and back end, you might want to read up on http://smarty.php.net/ which is a php based templating engine, and if I am not mistaken has full php function support, so you could try merging that with your existing skills, and then learn the basics of Smarty, then the basics of php, then get more complex from there.

This is definitely not a weekend job, but learning Perl has been one of the most fun and interesting chapters of my webmaster career. You could get a good start in a weekend by a first read through Perl For Dummies. You can do a lot of useful fun stuff with just a basic understanding of Perl.

Actually, learning Chinese is the future, as their economy is set to overtake the US and Japan in the future.
Apparently, most of the money will be in translator contracts.
That's what I'll be learning at my next school
