Your PageRank and Alexa rank is mostly to do with pouplarity.

This is actually pretty important, as it affects how high you are in the search engine. If I'm not mistaken, the more websites that are linking to you, the higher your pagerank.

Thats when the FFA pages thing started - NEVER USE THEM. Free for all pages were designed for newbies, who don't much about search engines.

Example: 1 link from a PR10 site, will probley get you up to PR4
Example: 10000 links from 10000 FFA pages with a PR0, will probley get you a minus PR4

If you use Firefox, it has a cool extention called Search Status that displays pagerank and Alexa in the status bar for the current page you are viewing.

you need to have as many links to your website as possible. Its better to have links from pages that rank better, meaning quality vs quantity will win. You should have ALOT of quality links though.
