On place I have gotten some images in the past is from www.pbase.com. This is an online galery system where members can store photos

You do have to contact the person who owns the gallery you find the picture in to ask permission to use the image. I've done this about 3 times, and each time was given permission to use the images without them asking for any $$. (none were used in For Profit business use though).

Also several times I have gone there looking for something, and seen a picture that gave me an idea of what to take my own picture of. Additionally, when I first got my "good" camera, since most photos show the camera settings, this helped me learn the right right settings for manual mode for special pictures.
