I did a bit of research, and I file the donations as gifts, which are not taxed up to around 20,000 dollars if memory serves. There are plenty of sites with similar content, so that's another reason not to be concerned. It doesn't bother me one bit but just FYI, there was a case a few years back of a kid doing pretty much exactly what you're doing. He was asking for voluntary donations from strangers to raise money for college and he was arrested and charged with pan-handling.
