Ive been running my own website online-matchmakers.co.uk for a couple of years now, this is where I initially gained my experience. I then created Freelancesolutions.com which is a freelance site. From this I got lots of work from a webmaster that had visited this site and liked the design. My point is that having really good example sites is a very good way of advertising your skills and may get you job offers. I am in the UK.

I've been freelancing for a long while, but only in the last 6 months can I say I do this for a living. It feels great.

lol, clientcenters

I don't make anything from the label of "freelancer". I don't have any work, even. But as long as I'm unqualified for my main career interest (physics), I'll keep on trying.

How many freelance webdesigners does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Four....

1 to design the lightbulb. 2 to program the backend of the lightbulb. 1 to create animation for the lightswitch.

I've been running my own business for years, I have clients from all over the world, some local as well. Word of mouth and good customer relations make the difference. Rich? No. But I make a liveable wage on parttime hours for now while I raise my kids.

One to screw it in, another to say there's a better way to do it take the lightbulb out and screw it back in again, and a third to say the first two were totally wrong... lightbulbs never work right anyway and proceed to sell you an oil lantern.

How many idiots does it take to change a lightbulb?

100 - 1 to hold the lightbulb and 99 to turn the ceiling round!!

Sorry bout that...

I make a living from various areas of my web businesses. I have multiple income strems including hosting, design, development work, affiliate schemes and selling my soul I'm in the UK btw...

For some reason when I read the title I thought this was going to be a ...screw in the lightbulb joke.

How many freelance webdesigners does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
3
One to screw it in, another to say there's a better way to do it take the lightbulb out and screw it back in again, and a third to say the first two were totally wrong... lightbulbs never work right anyway and proceed to sell you an oil lantern.

Ok enough goofyness....

I wouldn't say that I'm getting rich off being a web designer. It definately does help pay the bills though.
I don't rely on local people to buy my websites though. I sell my designs to artists I've met on-line in different groups. I also (when I've got the extra cash and want more sales) advertise in a couple smaller artist's magazines.
I couldn't imagine trying to make a living simply relying on local people and buisnesses.

That what you wanted to know?
