I would recommend on downloading some spyware programs to get rid of any that must be in your computer.. A good source for this is: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
I use their programs all the time.. Also ad aware is a excellent program to get rid of pirating/scumware/maluware as well. Another program you may want to check out is hijackthis.exe its a program that will let you know of every thing that loads up in your computer and you can get rid of anything that your not wanting on your computer. You'll have to do a search for hijackthis.exe on the net because I can't remember where I got the program from.

I might be a mixture of spyware and another problem. I make sure buy running msconfig.

Windows key + R then type in MSConfig

I make sure that on startup that nothing is running automatically.

Also run your virus scan software and try and see if that can't clean it up.

Yeah I have installed Service Pack 2....but...I think I've found the solution. After a "serious error" report was sent, the feedback given was that my graphics driver needed an update. I did so and it fixed the problem - though quite why it should go as far as "turning off" the monitor, I do not know...

I get this occasionally but not every time. Have you tried starting in troubleshooting mode and stepping through the startup watching for errors?
