Try the faithful picture

Try the faithful picture style with the contrast dropped 2 or 3 steps.
If you're interested, I have created a picture style with the brightness mapped from an x-rite color checker.
I trust it enough that if the JPG preview shows white, the data has been clipped.

There are a number of things to consider when experiencing technical problems. Also, you need to include WAY more detail about the specification of your machine to recieve a better diagnosis. So, bearing that in mind, if it was fine before that indicates that a recent change has modified something. Make a list of all the programs you've installed since the problem started occurring. Then remove them.

You might want to re-install the drivers first, or use the driver roll-back function on Windows XP. Completley removing & reinstalling the printer from scratch may be a last resort.

Also, let me know the exact specs of the machine & I'll try & help you some more
