All you needed to do was bring the image into Grey scale and then back into RGB make a layer of the original bg layer. Once this is done select the black with the magic wand tool set to 100% select inverse then mask click on the little add layer mask symbol in the bottom of your layers pallet while holding down the control/command key. This will mask the image and create a silloute of the black. Now create a new layer pick a blue or select it direcly from the image you have and fill the new layer with this color. Now place the layer with the blue fill over the bottom layer and select the layer mode to color. Wala you have should be amazed at the awsome ability photoshop has (I'm being sarcastic).

Just curious, can you post the effect using the Hue/Saturation pallet. I just want to see what that came out like.

Also:
Render>>Lighting Effects
Here you can choose a lighting style and change the color of the 'light', you can get some decent effects this way.

New fill layer, fill with blue then multiply blend.

I'm sure there are more, but I need to go make dinner..

grayscale, hue? just guessing, as I don't use PS, but it looks like the hue has been shifted and to get the best even colour, it would be best to start with a grayscale image?
