like they said, if you're doing this on YOUR OWN machine that's not a good thing. too many things to go wrong. it woulds like you're trying ot set up a server. i figured it was a second machine you have that's a spare. if it didn't install right from the disk, call the support form the makers of the posix flavor. getting it intalled is something they want ppl to do rright. they will guide you regaurdless of having paid for it. it's upkeep that you'll likely have issues with.

I think by "server" he meant "any webserving arrangement which hosts stuff on the internet". Which could also have implied "any remote webserving arrangement", or even "any webserving arrangement for which I have to pay".

$1/month sounds affordable, but you have realise that sometimes when people say "NO money whatsoever", they really mean "NO money whatsoever".

Besides, where's the fun in learning PHP without having to set it all up yourself? It's simple enough, and worth learning, I think.

No one said you should get a server, a simple and cheap webhosting account ($1-$2/mo) would do the trick. Just find the cheapest deal and go for it. It's not like you're going to put up a site that requires 100% uptime.

i am just trying to learn php, i dont want an actual server.

You're right, what was I thinking! It's not like you could have used all this time to learn PHP instead of wasting it trying to figure out how to get everything working on your own machine.

Anyways, whenever you have access to a working webserver (local or remote), here are a few sites that might be of help to you...

http://www.php.net/ (of course)

Quote: if not then if you know posix at all decide which flavor you want to know better, get a server install, you can choose mysql and php and tuxedo or (generally) apache to install

i did, i used the firepages one.

is this your main computer?
if so and you don't have a serving software you're f*cked anyway if you don't. the bad mysql is going to corrupt the server install.

if not then if you know posix at all decide which flavor you want to know better, get a server install, you can choose mysql and php and tuxedo or (generally) apache to install

not to mention ssl

then you have a dev environment that is what most web hosts use. posix is MUCH more stable than windows will ever be...
