I run a forum for car enthusiasts and we have the exact same problem. People signup, ask for advice get the answer then never come back. I think thats just the way it is with these things. Some stay, some go. Thats life.

Oh ok, well I didn't know its been discussed about in the mod corner (for obvious reasons ) but ok then. If thats thats the way it is then I'll leave it at that.

Yes, as Suzanne said it's been discussed several times in Mod Corner. VBulletin does allow you to set a forum so that the moderators have to approve every new thread - that way we could check to make sure they've posted other reviews before asking for their own. We decided against it. Sure, it's annoying when people do that, but that forum does attract a lot of new members, some of whom do stick around. I would definitely be against hiding the forum to new members.

You also have to remember that some people just don't feel comfortable critiquing other sites. Should they be denied a some helpful advice just because of that? Another issue is the double standard - people don't have to answer three other questions in any other forum before they can post their own.

Overall we found it just wasn't worth it. You will notice, however, that many of us just don't critique sites from people who don't do their three reviews (or participate elsewhere).

We've discussed it back and forth a few times, but the nature of being human is that some people will post and stay around and others are still searching for a place to call home.

Well it doesn't have to be 0-10/20 it can be 0-3 I find it semi-annoying that people just come here for a critique of their site then leave. Sorta the same for the market place although I can sorta understand that.

For some people, posting their site for critique keeps them coming back to read more of the thread, and therefore get active here.

For others, it is not so, as you've observed.

I don't know what the ratios are, but I'd guess that it evens out both ways. In such situations, I'd lean towards the option that provides more freedom.

Besides, I can think of scenarios where keeping Critiques open is a good idea. Say Member A refers Visitor B to TWF, recommending requesting a review for Visitor B's site, would Visitor B wait around to post 10-20 times before he can ask for a review?

otoh, I can see something similar working: members have to post three replies in Critiques before they're allowed to post a new thread. But that's a different issue.
