if you still haven't paid for it, and you know flash and the other things so you don't need it's ability to write those for you, then you might wanna look at emacs and xemacs.

i prefer them to everything else. then again, they're programming editors that were adapted by users who send in modules to work with scripting and markup languages as well.

they are QUITE versatile. they have the gnu compiler collection (gcc) embedded and since they are programming editors, they don't add anything to your code like front page, dreamweaver, and everything else i've seen whether it's free or not, does.

(emacs: http://www.gnu.org )
(xemacs: http://www.xemacs.com )

We're using Dreamweaver MX on a Mac G4 Desktop with great success - it's a great upgrade from v4 - you won't be disappointed.

Why don't you just download the trial version and try it out? That way you can compare the two for yourself and purchase a copy of MX if you like it more than 4.

I haven't used it for the purposes you are talking about but I think it is much improved on v4 and well worth the money to upgrade, I'm glad I did.

well it going to depend. Since I wan't a fan of 4, and used it virtually never, it is hard for me to reference the 2.

However, MX does one thing you will love or hate, but can always remove, and that is puts alot more in your face at your fingure tips.

Im not overly thrilled with its way of managing CSS but it is decent. XHTML has been enhanced in the version.

As far as displaying the sites in the editor itself, hard for me to say it has been enhanced.

The best features in MX have got to be code support, the HomeSite syntax coloring, code cleanup, etc.

MX kinda is like Dreamweaver 4, HomeSite 5, some tools, and an expanded liabrary of things on one package now. All generally without the stupid clutter of the crappy program we call Front Page (it was good once though).
