Maya is an awesome program and an industry standard in films and commercials but I think that zollet has offered some great advice.

3DStudio Max is also a great program and I think that many game developers prefer it to Maya.

My feeling is that it really depends on what you are trying to do and the industry you are working in; I always prefer to go with the industry standard.

I think it's up to each person's personal taste. Some perfer 3D Studio Max and some perfer Maya. You shouldn't listen to other people, go with the one you're most comfortable with and that you think suits you the best.

Good luck.
