but how exactly does it work? Are you given a customer id? What do you do with this, and when is it required in the future?

When you order a vBB you are given a customer ID (you pick) and a password (you pick). You use this to get into the members area where you can download vBB. The members area will only work for a year after the you buy it, but they update alot and it's really nice to be able to keep updated. If you have a liscence, not the leased, then you can renew it for $30 USD a year. Leased costs the same every year. Then vBulletin has a "sub-site" called vBulletin.org that contains all of the modifications sent in my owners of a vBB. You can download some very usefull modifications, called hacks.

I hope I helped you!

The vBulletin team would most likely not wish to share *any* of their "operation details".
