Thanks Suzanne! I'll have to give this a try and see what happens - about time, too!

.htaccess is NOT the same as access. It sounds like you need to create a blank file called "access" (no extension), yes, Notepad is fine.

Quote: but you really need to run them through a program to make any real sense of them.

Thanks - I did spend some time (finally!) looking into this and my host has this in their instructions:

"This log allows you to view the visitor statistics of your web site. To activate access logging create a folder with the following name in your hme directory: "log". This folder has to be on the same level as the "WWW" and "cgi" folders. In the "log" directory create the following file: "access". As soon as this file is created, logging will begin and every connection to your web site will be recorded to this file."

That is what you mean, right? Well, I feel pretty sure I get most of this, but am a bit confused at this access file. I do use the .htaccess file for an error 404 page, but this simply says "access". Can I create that in notepad, do you know? And must there be any data in it, or can it just be empty? If so, how do you save an empty file? Forgive my ignorance, but I confess I've been a bit chicken about all this stuff, but it's way past time I learn! (No confidence...) Appreciate any tips/hints you can share!!

How you check the raw logs will be down to the access to them that the hosts allow. Some will allow you to download them from the control panel and others via ftp, while others will only give you limited access to the stats through their own stats program. If you do download them (it may be a huge file) then it will be a jumble of lines of text showing ip addresses, pages viewed, etc but you really need to run them through a program to make any real sense of them.

Thanks Suzanne! So then there is something funny here - I'm not totally off the mark? I guess it is time to find a telephone number - tried but didn't have any luck in the support section, but you'd think they'd have one somewhere! I'll take a look again - just don't understand why they can't answer an e-mail for pity's sakes (or five I should say!) They're auto responder sure is working well...

Sounds like they are having an issue on their side. Did you check out the raw log files? And if you're supposed to have more space, hon, you need to call them.
