hm. All I'm doing is logging in - user and password is sent and the next message I recieve is the 550 (no successful login acknowledgement either). I'm not trying to login as root.

It doesn't change to a root directory. I did try setting one just to test, but that didn't help. I'm sure the directory exists because the files are accessible through http.

Just a guess, but root may mean root directory. Does you're FTP program change to a specific directory upon successfull login? If so, make sure that directory exists and that you have permissions to that directory.
