Don't know what your phone lines are like over there but we get "noise" on our lines. If what you suggested happened here, first thing I'd do is phone telecom (ph company) and get them to do a noise check on the line. 9 out of 10 times its the line and a service guy has to check and find the fault - usually at the connection at the roadside post.

Easiest way to get an IP address is to open up a DOS window and type in ping domainname. This will return the IP address unless the ISP's DNS server is acting up.

Hmm.... if it's not a DNS problem (which it sounds like it would most likely be), I would check my computer for viruses just to be on the safe side.

Quote: The problem is probably an overloaded network on their end.

That is what the guy that built my computer just told me.

I contacted them again via online chat and the tech support dude told me that I needed to update my drivers. He gave me a link and when i went there it said that there were no updates for my driver. Then he told me to change the initialization string. When i told him that is what I did with the other guy during the first tech support contact I think he pulled some more numbers out of his butt.

I also asked him if there was anyway possible that the problem could be on Earthlinks end and not mine before I go changing a bunch of stuff on my computer unnesessarily and he said, "No. Please reboot the system and the issue will be resolved."

*sarcastic laugh*

Was the issue resolved? NO!! It wasn't. I was booted off again just after I rebooted with his changes.

Quote: The easiest way to tell if it is a DNS problem is if you can reach the site by IP address

To do this can't i just do a whois lookup and get the IP numbers there and paste them into my browser? Like http://123.45.67.89???
If the answer is yes, then I did that and neither would come up but then again not much will with all the errors that I am getting. This is the third time I have tried replying to this post.

Wish I wasn't so impatient. Oh well, will deal with this tomorrow. I have to go to work. Thanks mariv

Generally a Server not Found error is caused by something wrong with a DNS server. A few weeks back I had some problems with my ISP at work. When I tried pinging the DNS servers, only one of them, the secondary one came back with a response. So I was receiving errors because the DNS server was overloaded and offline. The easiest way to tell if it is a DNS problem is if you can reach the site by IP address, not Domain name, then there are DNS problems.

Earthlink's customer support is useless. It is highly doubtful that it is the modem since it is not a new modem. The problem is probably an overloaded network on their end.
