I'd tried to use the

 tag but none of the code inbetween the pre tag shows, it just renders as normal html..?

don't waste your time with xmp, it never had full support and has been dropped as one.
the answer i believe is on same line, but again its not widely supported anymore
use

 or change the < to < and > to >

[edit]just a note on your tutorial, dont teach content on seperate lines, its bad coding and has issues with certain browsers. also to put a background in a table it isnt "backgroundimage" its just background[/edit]
