actually, i think i was wrong. i *think* this is how it works, but i dont feel like testing it right now...

if you specifically link a favicon in a document, such as:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="./favicon.ico" type="image/ico" />'
it will always show in Mozilla browsers. Otherwise, it will only be requested when the page is bookmarked.

In IE i believe it is never requested unless you bookmark the page, or create a shortcut to it.

I'm not too concerned with how well it works from a user's perspective. I don't even have a favicon. However, if the call is made to the server as the site is being added, well then great - it means that folks are bookmarking my site. Never a bad thing

in IE you need to add it to favorites, in Mozilla (and id assume Netscape) it always shows whether it's in your favelist or not.

Yes, the call for favicon.ico appears to be triggered by adding the page to your favorites. That is very nice to know!
