I use Textpad and HomeSite 5 -- both are pretty good. Depends on whether or not you are willing to pay. Some work if you don't pay and are shareware, some are just free trials. At any rate, you can get all of them at Download.com.

Rob, I use the regex find/replace a lot. I don't remember if it's in the lite version. The syntax coloring I could do without. As well as the bookmarks, dictionary, etc.

Before settling on EditPad Pro, I tried maybe a dozzen different ASCII editors. Like Megan said, find one that fits your needs.

Oh, 6 of one half a dozen of the other. All of these programs are more or less the same. There's no point in arguing about which one is best. It all depends on your own personal preferences. I think the best thing to do is try a bunch and see which one works for you.

P.S. Does anyone use HTML Kit? It seems to be the only editor I can find that will do what I want it to do and I can't figure out this "output" window thing.

Edit: nevermind, I figured it out. I think I'm just going to use Dreamweaver instead...

I mentioned EditPlus and noone said anything about it. It is very good, trust me, give it a try. It supports many scripts/languages and has built in preview (ctrl-b) and HTML tags and stuff like that.

PS. I use EditPad as well and I only use that as a text editor since EditPlus in my opinion is better for PHP and such.

Megan- way to give 1stPage its props!

I actually downloaded it the other day because I heard it had HTML tidy built-in. I didn't like the way that worked though (it didn't want to save my settings during one session - i had to load them in every time I wanted to run the utility, which was annoying). There are a couple of other programs that have this feature as well so I might try those (Note Tab light is one... I'm having to do *a lot* of conversion of bad HTML here and it's starting to get to me).

1stPage is basically a Homestie rip-off with a few additions/subtractions.

ditto Mark, i tried the Pro version but was kind of turned off. Maybe i didn't give it a chance, what do you think? I see it has all kinds of code highlighting extensions and crap, which i can do without, but i suppose it would be nice...

I've been an EditPad user for years.
I've even purchased the Pro version.

with editpad its just a push of a button to view in a browser, they say you shouldnt do this but I have had over 500 files open in editpad at one time without any problems

EditPad - http://www.editpadclassic.com/ (make sure you get CLASSIC and not PRO, unless you want frivilous features) is hands down the best notepad replacement in existence. I'm very suprised it's not more well known. There is no bloat, only basic text-editing features done infinitely better than notepad. And the files open in tabs so you don't need 10 instances open if youre modifying 10 files, like with notepad. It's a standalone .exe, no installation, and it minimizes to the tray.
