phpBB requires php4, but it also requires a mySQL database.

PHPBB, the current version, will work with the following databases:

MySQL 3.2x,

PostgreSQL 7.x,

Microsoft SQL Server 7/2000

Microsoft Access (via ODBC)

It does require PHP which can be installed on a Windows server if you are running SQL server.

Again, there is no simple answer to your question. It all depends how active your board is.

I knew my thread got placed somewhere. Sorry for the delayed responses everyone...hope you didn't mind.

I have found an excellent hosting company to host my phpbb board. I am definitely going to be experimenting with it, and I've heard that it is incredibly user-friendly, and in set up too

Generally, what would you all recommend in server space and monthly bandwidth for an active forum? Just throw your comments to me - I would appreciate it.

Again, thanks,
Robby

I use phpBB and I love it. It's awesome. Like zollet, I can't realy answer those questions but I did want to add something that wasn't mentioned. phpBB requires php4, but it also requires a mySQL database. If your host doesn't support/supply that I'd find another host first. If you have other questions just go ahead and post them here, but you may also want to check out the phpBB support forums too.

P.S. Just be sure to <del>thoroughly</del> check previous posts before asking becasue they're good over there, but they'll blast you if you're answer can be found by searching previous posts.

Hi Robby,

We have used phpBB ourselves and we also install it for our users and they are very happy with it. However, your questions are really hard to answer...

1. The actual phpBB2 takes only a few MBs, but can be bigger if you allow avatal uploads and such.

2. How much space is needed for 30,000 posts depends on how big each post is.

3. Bandwith again depends on how frequent your visitors visit the forum and post, but if you get a host with mod_gzip, you shouldn't use that much.

Overall, I would say you'd be safe with around 100mb space and 4-5GB of monthly bandwidth (maybe even less).
