I found your site to be extremely slow and i gave up before it loaded. If you want to make it has a webmaster, try a paid host. There not has expensive has they used to be and you can get a pretty decent host for about £15 a year these days.

If you are in the UK, try Supanames.co.uk for £15.99 a year and you get a free domain name.

I think that this needs more direction and a defined colour scheme and get rid of all the banner ads at the top! (Plus the pop-up ones drove mw mad!!)

At 800*600 I get a horizontal scrollbar and the logo quite frankly needs work! On the firest screen at this resolution there is nothing to tell me what the site is about and the title needs to be changed to something useful for the visitor and search engines. If you have to have banners then put them lower down under the important things on the site.

I totally agree, there is a place for them but they have been overdone a bit & I just prefer lighter screens!

I think you must first come up with a design and theme. Figure out your target audience, then work from there. Get an appropriate color scheme, layout, and pick fonts.

I'd generally expect to see a lighter scheme running throughout the site. Your layout is functional as it is, but you have a problem with some of the boxes being misaligned and out of shape. The default font is probably not the best way to go for a techy site. Use Verdana or Arial...

I found the blue links hard to read and may I suggest taking away the link line and adding a mouseover to them.
Big scrollbar at 800x600,so check Your table and image width tags. it doesn't matter what the tables are if You have graphics forcing them wider.
Great effort for a starter and I to found out the "web" in general don't like black backgrounds so You will hear that a bit.Glad to help in any way I can.

OK first up loose the flaming text and either loose the picture or make it slightly bigger than thumbnail size.
I'm saying this because you said you want to maybe add a shopping cart bit to it, flaming text, black background etc wont be taken seriously.
I think you have been browsing bravenet to much , you need more of a theme, a banner/logo and a style to suit your content.
Ifyou have a poll, you should have it on the site, not an offsite poll, you need more info to keep people at your site instead of just sending them elsewhere.
You also need to change your title tag "www.yoursite.com" ??
You need to have an about page, like, what does JHJ stand for, what does it mean, what do you offer, why should we surf your site ...

The layout is reasonable, I do believe there is a little too much black. The skeleton pic is cute but big in bytes, your logo is 75k ?!.

You seem to a have a reasonable understanding of tables, however, the 3rd column could be consistant with the two to it's left by sitting at the top of the cell.

Metatags! <- These will make or break you, presently they do not exist on your site.

If this is your first 'from scratch' I believe you are off to a good start, look upon your sites as you believe your potential customers would. Decide who is your potential audience/customer base, - what do you see ? What do you like ? what do you not like ?

The look and feel you presently pose has a kind of 'IT for Metallica fans' look, is this the look you really want ?

This isn't bad for an early start.

I am seeing some overlap in Opear 6 - the ". Still experimenting with my site builder so please be patient" text is going overtop of your search box. This is most likely a problem with nested tables. I took a quick look at your code and I do see a lot of them in there - it's generally not a good idea to use a lot of nested tables, especially when you don't need to. Or remove the "align=top" from that table.. that could help.

Another thing I notice in your code is that you've mixed your tag case up a lot (some are in caps as in TD some are lower case). Under the new w3c specifications, code should always be written in lower case so it would be a good idea to get in the habit of doing that.

Okay, lets try not to think about that. About the design. Next time, try to stay away from the boxy look. Also work on your graphics skill - the flaming text look went out about 5 years ago. One immediate change you could make is to change the link colour - blue text on a black background is pretty hard to read.

Well it's basically a personal site with a lean towards helping people find technology related material. It's still in it's infancy. What I want to make JHJ Technologies into is a one stop shop for computer help, repair, purchase, upgrades, etc. This is kind of the in between site while I collect all the things I need to get the main site off the ground. It's meant to educated me in what I need to improve on. It's also meant to be slightly funny and with a little seriousness thrown in for affect.
