I use fancy ASCII editors because I do minimal HTML design work. I don't have use for color pickers, image tools, link management, etc. that designers crave.

I also use EditPad as a hex editor for other personal projects. A feature I've yet to find a designer want.

I think that you really just have to try a bunch and see what you prefer. Some people will go with more of a spoofed up noepad, such as Textpad or EditPad,while others will prefer a more full-fledged HTML program such as Homesite.

I usually go with Homesite for heavy editing. It's got lots of great features and goes beyond the standard. You can expect pretty much every code editor to have syntax highlighting, line numbering, things like that. Homesite aslo has an extensive search/replace function (you can even s/r in files that aren't open) and customizable keyboard shortcuts (so I can decide that ctrl-d means insert or whatevert I want). That really saves the pinkie strain). Those two features are a must for me. There's also built-in HTML tag help, color picker, image insertion (so you don't have to find out the height and width in another program!), validator, link checker, etc. etc.

For little fixes and stuff I like to have a text editor (Textpad) on hand.

Of course, now that I've discovered Dreamweaver MX this could all change ...

that's probably because 1stPage went out of production a few years ago and so it has fallen under the radar. They had issues with copyright and patents, and had to go back to the drawing board.

It was unstable on many machine, but was a nice effort.

I use Notepad but a few friends who don't want to learn HTML (easy) use an editor called 1st Page 2000.
It's a free download and apparently user friendly and functional,give it a go if You want.
