Even though the width may not be quite right you can always stick maxlength in there to keep it to so many characters. Plus if you need a certain width or height you can use css.

I think if you use non-fixed-width fonts like verdana instead of fixed-width fonts like courier, you get varying widths.

There was a thread about this posted somewhere here before. Why don't you try searching for it?
