PHP has given MANY people the opportunity to program who would have never been able to before. To write a simple PHP script is almost easier than HTML

PHP followed by PERL... I learned PERL 4 years ago, and PHP 2 years ago, and learning PERL made PHP much easier, but PHP is easier to work with and has more user-friendly errors

PHP is my favorite and Perl is second. I've also worked a lot with ASP and MS SQL, but I really don't like ASP.

K,

I'm gonna throw a spanner in here and say ColdFusion as its is just as scalable and powerful as ASP & PHP but at the same time easier to learn and code...

Just my $3.56 worth....

My favourite server side language would have to be PHP. It's fast, reliable and it can be used for so many things. Plus I like the fact that it can be combined with one of the webs most popular databases, mySQL.

I do most of my web development using *NIX solutions, where PHP (& mySQL) is my first choice, followed by PERL.

Before learning PHP or PERL, I used ASP (& MS SQL 7) on IIS. The cost was the main reason for the switch.

1. PHP
2. ASP

PHP for the same reasons as yours, and that it integrates very well with an excellent database, MySQL.

ASP — first server-side language I learnt. I'm hangin on to it for sentimental value.
It's just my MS alternative for PHP; only used where PHP isn't available. IMO, it has too many weaknesses: MS Access, cost, speed etc.

PHP wins. Again.
