I don't think it's that bad to cover up the affiliate URL when you're genuinely using it on your web site. As long as you're not placing affiliate links in sneaky places, all over the place, I don't have a problem with that.

Because tricking customers is a sure way to get stuck with the bad guy label. The more transparent your process, the more your trust rating goes up.

People don't mind referrer links if they think the referral is bonafide, only if it's a quick scam or spam.

So I think it's a really bad business move to use trickery of any kind.

I know you're saying that people don't want to click, but you know what, if people are having qualms about clicking on referral links, there may be other issues that you're not addressing and are trying to solve by just covering them up.

*sigh*

I'm guessing you don't know any JavaScript yourself?

It's not a program, it'd be a little bit of JavaScript that says for every link, do this -- onmouseover put this in the window status bar. I'm not going to write that script, though, because I don't agree with the concept.

its because i own a webmaster review site and some people dont like the thought of joining a program if they ahve been referred by someone. I know it sounds silly but its true, this way they wont know *rubs hands together*

*note*

For your own best interests and for Opera, use the title="" attribute in the link as well, like so:

your link

...

you can just add some JavaScript to the link:

onmouseover="window.status='whatever you want to have there instead'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;"
