I just want to add that what you're trying to do is not the best way to go. There are many ways you can make your site adjust to multiple resolutions without resizing images (which makes them look very poor).

Hmm, I'm not quite sure how you could make it stretch and repeat...

The only way I can think of is to split the middle cell into three columns, and so slice middle.gif so that the first white bar is a bg in the first cell(1), the empty region is a bg in the second(2), and the second white bar is a bg in the third cell(3).

Using width=100% for the cell (2) will make it stretch as wide as possible.

middle.gif is a background, which doesn't resize.

If you want it to resize, then add it as an image and add a layer on top of it.

I don't think percentages can be used for widths. Besides, this will also only make the image stretch or contract disproportionately.

If you wan't to make it flexible then you need to design for the lowest screen resolution you want and add a repeating element as a background for the higher resolutions.
