MySQL because of its open source, free nature. Also, I haven't played with Sybase or Oracle yet, but those are more commercial solutions for corporations, IMO.

I worked with M$ SQL 7 for a while. Loved it. Right now, I'm limited to mySQL. Those would be my two picks. Unless, of course, someone would bye me a copy of Oracle!

I'd have to say MySql also, but my experience is limited to MySql, PostgreSql, Access and FoxPro. I'm sure some or all of the enterprise databases like Oracle, Sybase, MS Sql etc would be at the top of my list if i had access to them or experience with them.

I'll agree with Mairving that for price MySQL can't be beat but it can't compete for scalability yet with the big boys (Oracle/SQL Server/etc).

While Access definitely isn't great for the web it is hardly a "bloated" database program. It's a great program for people who are database newbies to get comfortable with how databases work.

My fav is SQL Server 2000 because I use it all the time and I love:

1) Stored Procs
2) User defined functions
3) HTTP Template Queries (XML)
4) Ease of use, yet powerful

Whatever you might think about Microsoft, SQL Server 2000 is a great RDBMS.
