iKonboard offers a remotely hosted board with one ad on it, has almost the same functions of iKonboard, including the ones you mentioned. Go to ikonboard.com and then click on myiKonboard to sign up.

I'll second the motion on vBulletin. It is a little costly though at $80 a year or $160 lifetime licence.

Actually, you don't need to remove the install.php file (although you might want to for security reasons). Once you have used it to install your message board, it will redirect the user to the message board if someone tries to access it.

phpBB is pretty good. Just don't forgot to remove your install.php file after installation. It also now works on quite a lot of platforms from SQL server to MySQL.

My vote goes to phpBB v2. It is by far the best FREE message board out there. The only message board I can think of that _might_ be a little better would be vBulletin. Thumbs up for phpBB and vBulletin.

This won't help with 3rd party hosts, but if you do host it yourself, I swear by phpBB. phpBB.com (?) Their version 2 has been out for a little while now. You name it, it's got it. Make it as simple or as powerful as YOU want it. Custom user settings, smiles, private messages, multiple boards, user groups, moderators, new message icons, avatar gallery, and mail when reply (which is essential in my book for keeping conversations going). And it's all free with no ads. I love it. Now all I need are more visitors

(php and mysql are required)

Well, I have just had a go at it and I am completely stuck. It can't find the files e.g. BACK_UP in the directory on the instalation thing.

Ibforums is free and very easy to setup... They also do hosting and will do installation & upgrade for you. Though you do have to pay for those...
