you can do this if you're using an image... put the onmouseover event in the image tag rather than wrapping it in a link:

<!--rather than this-->
<a href="#" onmouseover="dostuff()">blah blah</a>

<!--you could do this-->
<img src="some/image.jpg" onmouseover="dostuff()">
