"just be careful as such tricks can loose you visitors instead of gaining them" - yes, but the person has already elected to leave my site by clicking the back button! The whole reason I am asking for such a script is so it doesn't affect visitors who choose to explore my site.

I think you can use the onunload (whatever is opposite to onload), this will create the pop under/over on exit of your site but will always do it, not just via back button.
the back button could be hard to code for, people can use back button on browser, right click and choose back or even from history.
just be careful as such tricks can loose you visitors instead of gaining them, good luck
