Hey,
I'm Australia based too and agree that hosting in Australia is very expensive.
I was hosting with Gurgaon.net of India, but they're lousy people-their basic charges are pretty low, but then onwards, they keep trying to fleece you by thrusting add-ons or asking you to cough up money for non-existent issues.

I used to host with Pugmarks.com. They offer Cobalt servers on the Exodus network-very good, very reliable, neat control panel, but slightly heavy on the price side for a college kid. For a company, I think their charges aren't unaffordable.
Try asking for a guy called Babbar Malhotra at Pugmarks. He can offer you space for a cheaper amount than the marked prices on the site.
