swishzone.com is a Flash application that is inexpensive, and creates Flash animations. But it doesn't have the power of Flash to connect to a database or text file. Java Applets can have text entered into them, but I don't use Java Applets, so I can't recommend any in particular.

Hopefully someone else can pitch in.

Apologies for not making myself as clear as I might have, but as a "Newbie" to this excellent site I am as you say catching on more with each subsequent post.

The Scroller is intended to promote specific Company-related events or advertise certain promotions on the site.

Thanks very much for the link to the script on DHTML Central I'll have a play and bear what you said re: Flash and Java Applets in mind.
If you can provide any pointers to simple (Free?) Flash text animators, I'd be in your debt.

I know you don't want to hear this, but the reason people aren't giving specific examples might be twofold -- one, your needs are still undefined (though getting more defined with each not-quite-right search or script submitted). Two, DHTML may not be the right tool for the job, since to meet cross-browser and cross-OS compatibility, it requires a lot of complex coding, and it might not be worth it for the little bit of text you need.

I would suggest a number of different things:

1. Consider a random news item or sequencer instead of a scrolling ticker type area. (Server-side, not client side)
2. Consider using a java applet or flash to do it (smaller file size, better results).
3. Further define your needs

Dynamic Drive certainly seems to be one of the better DHTML sites but I've a few problems with their scripts (maybe I'm being too fussy?)

1 - As my script will be prominent at the top of my index all the ime, I'm after something that will not look too out of date in the future and favour the "Typewriter" style used by the BBC site http://news.bbc.co.uk/
(or perhaps fader style if available elsewhere?)

2 - Compatability with Netscape seems to be a problem, specifically older versions of the browser.

is a case in point.

3 -Unlike your own excellent site, I'm after something that doesn't require a text box.

For a ticker, you'd probably want to use Java, interestingly. It would be less code. However, you might have some browser conflicts.
