Check out Delphi Forums, I've used them for 3 years, both public and private forums.

Their forums are powered by Prospero, which is by far the best forum software I've seen on the net - excellent message handling for users.

One rider - Delphi are feeling the economic squeeze severely, so it's quite possible they might have to shut down. If a forum archive/history is critical to you, think twice - and then go somewhere else

Mind you, any free solution you don't host yourself could close down anytime.

Try cityhosts.net we have our forums there, they have been cool so far considering they completly set my forum up for me.

I want to set up some private forums for a small nonprofit group. I am sorry if I was obscure.

Some of the sites that provide allow private forums are said to prune them to 150 posts. This would be particularly bad for us.

I'm not following. Do you want a list of web hosting forums? Or hosts that allow forums?
