On most shared servers, databases can be an overkill for anything less than 100 pages, or that's what I've found on benchmarks.

I disagree, politely, and only in a minor way.

Database driven sites do have some draw backs if you don't use url mapping, for instance, in getting reasonable search engine ranking.

Additionally, they can be overkill and resource wasting for small sites (under 20 pages) with mostly static content.

I think that's pretty well the main drawbacks, lol.

Well, it can be annoying to go through and change things in a db that you could otherwise quickly change (massive global changes) if you aren't an experienced user.

I use databases for my site -- I have all sorts of things like news, product updates, version history, catalog, messaging etc that just couldn't do without 'em.

The last 7 websites I've developed have been database driven. The reason for this is the need for the user to update content and generate new pages from templates using a simple-interface content managment system. Works preety good, too

The photo galleries make database driven sensible. Same with the blog. The rest doesn't need to be, doesn't make sense, actually, to have basically static pages database driven. Instead, I use includes for those pages.
