Kevin Yank has done a few PHP/MySQL tutorials around the place, great way to start.
Heaps of places out there to start off, just not much after the basics.

I broke down and paid $129 for a book PHP and MySQL web development, published by SAMS, not for the beginner and has a few errors but seems very intense, not recommended to anyone without previous coding experience.

Well, I don't if that link you sent me was good or not, but from the first page alone, it seemed to answer ALL OF MY QUESTIONS! Whether it will teach me what I want to know, that's a different story... but I'll go through the whole thing soon (tonight?) and see how it goes...

This is best tutorial I have EVER read on PHP/MySQL. You can go from being a complete newbie to knowing all the basics in an hour or so!

I find the tutorials at http://www.wdvl.com/Authoring/Languages/PHP/ usually okay for learning. But really, a good book will help most.

How much is a Wrox book -- it was about $75 Canadian for PHP Programming Professional -- says about 36 pounds UK? Would that be reasonable for you in NZ?

Maybe you can start an Amazon honour account to buy you technology, lol...

I picked this up a fry's for 24.00 and it seems real easy to follow, with lots of screen captures. I can't tell you how accurate or good the examples are though being that I am learning myself. I have been looking on ebay for some books, found some but they all go way over my budget in the last 10 minutes or so.

I found when I made my html site it was hard to think like a newbie again, so hopefully I can put all the bits I can find together and put them in a way anyone can understand
