disaster-master, Ctrl + ALT + Delete in Win98 to see if POPPROXY.EXE is running. If it isn't, go into your /Program Files/Norton (or whatever) folder and look for POPPROXY.EXE.

Also, what version of NAV are you running? Basically, this is the little file that is used to connect your mail servers to Norton.

You also may want to temporarily shut down Sygate and see if you don't get that message.

I've used Symantec's site to solve numerous problems over the years. I suggest going to http://www.symantec.com/techsupp and looking around.

mark, you mentioned this and I am not sure how to make sure of this:

Quote: Make sure the file POPPROXY.EXE is running

I rebooted last night and before my computer shut off, I got the following message in a little box.

POPROXY
Nortons Antivirus is unable to start e mail protection. Please ensure that TCP/IP is installed and port 110 is available.

Here are a couple of SCREENSHOTS OF MY SETTINGS. Will you take a peek and see if these are correct or if what I have could be causing this error.

I hope I have the correct screens shots.

Make sure the file POPPROXY.EXE is running as it is required by NAV to check your incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses. I have gotten the exact same error when that script wasn't running. And other than that, just make sure your firewall has given NAV access to the 'Net. I have never used Sygate, only ZoneAlarm, so I can't help you there.

As for cleaning out your temporary files, I find going to Tools > Options > Delete Temporary Files being most efficient. But if you have Norton, you could try CleanSweep.

Yeah, that is the hosts file. Those entries are okay. I would wait until the problem occurs again and then try accessing them by IP address. I would suspect that it is possibly Sygate related.

Running Windows 98.

I have used Sygate for about 6 months without problems. Switched from IE 5.0 to IE 6.0 about 2 months ago. Started having the image display problems approx. 1 1/2 weeks ago. Then the page cannot be displayed errors started shortly after that. At first maybe once or twice a day but now it is an almost constant.

Quote: Make sure that Sygate didn't leave anything in your hosts file. This could cause problems. This is a file on your system that can override DNS settings. Do a search to find the file and use Notepad to view it.

I did a "Find Files or Folders" on Sygate and didn't find anything. Don't know if this is what you are talking about or not but I searched for "hosts" and read the file with notepad and got this: (is this what you wanted me to search for?)

127.0.0.1 pop3.norton.antivirus
# Added by Norton AntiVirus for e-Mail scanning

SyGate and DNS problems...

I recall having DNS issues on my 2nd computer back when I used SyGate. I can't remember the details now but it was a known problem and there was a workaround for it.

That is a problem sometimes using Norton AV's email protection feature. Sometimes the pop-server times out because of the wait.

What operating system are you running?

Make sure that Sygate didn't leave anything in your hosts file. This could cause problems. This is a file on your system that can override DNS settings. Do a search to find the file and use Notepad to view it.

Does this tell you anything?

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Earthlink Mail', Server: 'pop3.norton.antivirus', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I delete my temp internet files pretty much on a daily or every other day basis. That is habit for me. Don't think it is that.
Next time I am unable to get to TWF I will try the IP #s.

I am using dial-up/Earthlink. And was using the Sygate Firewall but uninstalled it a last week because I thought it may be part of my problem.

I have had a few instances where my Outlook Express mail gives me an error message. And today it has done that several times. I will post exactly what the error messages is next time I get it. Since my e mail is acting up I would be enclined to say it is a problem with Earthlink. Not sure. Guess I should just e mail them but I wanted to get a little ammo before doing so. They always blame everything on someone/something else.

Forgot to add: I downloaded Opera last week because of the image display problem that started all of this thinking that it was an IE 6.0 problem. Didn't have any problems with Opera until it started doing the same thing the other day. ie: images not displaying, pages not loading.
