That's what I thought. If so, how many millions are using their browser and do they count as netscape users in the poll quoted above?

NETSCAPE USERS 4X/6X = 349,000,000 world wide

Opera Users = 3,000,000 world wide (1,200,000 registered)

I've got a lot of room on mmy HD - plenty of room for a browser that is somewhat larger for the simple reason that it is not part of the OS

what's the operative distinction here between "big" and "bulky?"

on mmy machine Netscape loads files significantly faster than IE - perhaps I haven't "rolled over" enough to benefit from IE's supposed advantages

I am, to my embarrassment, monolingual

I don't like the animated ad banner included in Opera's free version (the one I have)

finally, I think the evidence is clear that M$ placed its Insufferable Encumbrance in the advantaged position it has through illegal business activities that have had a highly destructive impact on the world economy - I choose not to support an organization that has been the subject of continuing prosecution by the US Department of Justice

principle over convenience afforded by criminality

I think AOL was big at one time, but then they went like microsoft is doing, they wanted a seperate way to view pages, graphics ... people wanted universal.
And I think the AOL is a package, connection, browser, email etc, cant have one without the other.
I know a girl that works for AOL and she is always busy, she's just gone to India to help train the tech people there.
AOL is an option in NZ as well but I doubt anyone would use it as its real pricey.

everyone mentions Netscape is slow and bulky, compared to IE maybe but think about it, whenyou start up windows all your fonts, bookmark, the browser etc are loaded, and I bet everyone has a slow starting computer, when Netscape is loaded it has to load all the fonts, bookmarks ... so is it really slower? If i have email, folders or browsers open, Opera loads slower than NS for me.
check out netscapes site for languages, I'm sure you can get them, IE has them apart of it as outlook etc uses them as well

So if aol has their own browser, why aren't they in the top three? or do less people use aol than Opera? And if no big comuputing business interest is installing netscape onto people's computers, then why the heck is anybody using it?

Its big, its bulky, its slow and in addition, doesn't manage foreign languages like ie. What's the great advantage that millions of people are spending hours on end downloading netscape when ie is already sitting there on there desktop especially since if you want to avoid ie for some reason, like the ones I've indicated, there is always opera, which is at least, faster, more user friendly, and smaller than netcape.

Excuse my ignorance of what's going on the the American computing and internet scene. I'm just curious.

AOL has a contract with Microsoft - use of IE by AOL in exchange for an icon on the windows desktop. I'm not sure when this contract finishes up but I think it's fairly soon. AOL could decide to switch to NS at that time, we'll see. I heard something about them trying to change their software to work with NS but I'm not sure about the details on that.

That's three million people who went out of their way to use use opera. In other words they actively went out and chose it over the browser that was set up for them on their system by the isp or the os dealers.

by the stats given above/below (whichever way you reading this) its not 3 million, its 352 million users that went out of their way, Netscape isnt a default browser

I can't believe you don't like opera.
Its great.
I have had all sorts of problems with ie, not to mention by nimda and then finding out that in order to browse securely with ie I have to download all the patches, which were like 20 megabytes or more. I hate big downloads.

So I went and downloaded opera and have been using it ever since. Its fast, has all sorts of cool features like, saving your windows so that you can have multimple home pages, opening additional pages easily and quickly. Don't tell me you can open a seperate window and type in a new url while still downloading another one as easily in ie as you can in opera! And the magnifying glass feature is great. Its a brilliant stroke that helps you resize the page, so that you don't have to scroll horizontally.

How many opera users? 3 million.?

That's three million people who went out of their way to use use opera. In other words they actively went out and chose it over the browser that was set up for them on their system by the isp or the os dealers.

The only major advantage with ie that I can see is its support for right to left writing. Opera can display Hebrew, but it can't present page layout from right to left.

But overall, Opera is far superior to the the big two.
