IE5 had an option to keep IE4 settings, but no, you can't have two versions of IE on the same computer.

The only way around this is to have the OS on multiple partitions on your HD and to install different versions on each partition. Or to have multiple PCs.

What is infuriating for developers, also helps them in a way -- because you can't have both, people upgrade more often and more thoroughly, and unfortunately for the people, permanently.

Which is why we can, for the most part, forget that IE3 and IE4 ever existed.

I'd really like to know too, but I know you can't just have IE4 and then go and install IE5.. because IE5 will overwrite..
