Quote: Is Photoshop considered industry standard because of what it can do, or because of its price?? If PSP was $600 and photo shop was only $100 would PSP be the standard???

Good question, my guess would be no, adobe plays with the big boys and wont let others (like jasc) play in the sandpit with em, they keep the circle of playmates small and over price the heck out of everything.

Its real weird what is and what isnt "industry standard", I mean FP for example is meant to be way up there as one of the best editing tools out there, wheres the logic there? but then again anything with the microsoft name on it is "the best"

now dont get me wrong people, I dont dislike MS products, some are really good (forget which ones, but some are )

**I'm going to ask santa to wipe out the title "industry standard" :D** haha merry xmas all

I only toy around with photo shop every now and again, and still dont like it. I picked up paint shop pro version 7 and was comfortable with all the controls within a day.

If your just breakin in to graphics i would definatly get PSP first its pretty darn cheap and can pull out pretty much everything photo shop can and in less time.

I've always had a question on my mind.....
Is Photoshop considered industry standard because of what it can do, or because of its price?? If PSP was $600 and photo shop was only $100 would PSP be the standard???

I have and use them both (psp5, psp6 and photoshop6) and for speed, ease of use I'd put my money on psp every time, I havent had the joy of using psp 7 yet (and probably wont) but with all the plugins out there, free or not you can do anything on either, if one of the programs doesnt have a built in function, a plugin is available for it to do it, and 90% of these plugins are universal.

If money isnt an option go for photoshop only because of the stigma attached, but dont expect to learn it over night, there are heaps of free tutorials on the web for any graphic program.

one site i enjoy seeing and has been in many photography magazines is pinoy7.com, (latest seen in digital photo user mag, july 2001 - UK mag) this guy/gal is awesome, which makes me believe its not the program that does great work, its the person using it.

good luck

I think that the answer to this is really up to you. Try out both and see which one you like better. Photoshop is worth it's price tag more or less, yes, but only if you're going to be using all the extra features, and many people won't use them. I have yet to really spend a lot of time with PSP 7 but I have heard that it is quite good and would probably suffice for many given the difference in pricing.

One other program you may want to check out is Macromedia's Fireworks. It isn't so much a photo edtior like PS and PSP, but it was created to do web graphics so it can produce some nice effects (The TWF logo/banner area was done in Fireworks).

One more thing you need to know about Photoshop vs. PSP - Photoshop is THE professional standard, so if you want to get a job with a company doing graphics work you will be expected to know Photoshop.

PS6 rules, I repeat RULES! I've uese PS 3, 4, 5 and now 6 and never even thought of using another one. It's a complete program

So it IS value for money actually.

But if you're new to image-editing, I'd say by something else (cheaper). When you like img-editing still after a while, you could buy PS6 (or then maybe PS7? )

When I first started using photoshop, it was very confusing to me- over time, however, you will learn how to use it more effectively through reading online tutorials / books. There used to be a great site @ andyart.com, but it looks like they have made it into a pay site now.

In any event, I have also found photoshop to be pretty much all I need as far as designing graphics/UI's is concerned.
Photoshop is a great program- but from what I've heard, Paint Shop Pro is a much better value, although it might lack some features.

Good luck,

Never actually used PSP much before. I've used PS mostly since the beginning from v5.0 to v6.0 and never needed to look anywhere for any other program. It's got just about everything I ever wanted far as webgraphic design is concerned. I guess that should stand as testament for PS's assets.

On the downside, it's quite slow and hogs resources like heck. It's also quite hard to learn to use because of all it's features, hidden away in hundreds of menus. Although there are many many free tutorials on the net, you should be prepared to spend a lot of time on it.

Go with PSP is you're just starting out. Spend the extra cash on something else useful.
