thanks for responding.

let me try and clarify:-

I have multiple web-sites on multiple servers that I
don't want to have to replicate across another set of servers for load balancing because I dont maintain the sites.
I also dont know which ones will get loads of traffic
that will slow down the other sites on the server.

Perhaps the content could replicated automatically
onto the other servers when any one or more sites gets
too much traffic?

All sites will not get swamped simultaneously so I
should be able to spread the load across the
"non-swamped" servers.

Does this make sense/exist?

microsoft advanced servers can do this
however you would need 3 to set it up at optimal for what you are wanting to achieve
and 3 cal's your are looking well over 2,000 for os,

plus a good mcse tech with iis experience

it can be done tho but is $$ and for large networks and huge sites

Well without knowing what servers are you using and your exact set up in terms of IPs etc it's difficult to come up with the perfect solution.

I've got a cluster of about 10 linux servers that use load balancing quite effectively. Here's the one I use:

http://lists.securepoint.com/listinfo/big-ip

You can find an interesting article about the available techniques here:

http://www.webtechniques.com/archives/1998/05/engelschall/
